Kazakhstan. Semipalatinsk. The first of june is "Children Defense Day". A girl with a white chalk sketches a couple of happy children and traffic lights on the ground of the park. Semipalatinsk has lived in the shadow of the Soviet atomic test program 456 atomic testing - 116 atmospheric, 340 underground - from 1949 to 1989 at Semipalatinsk Polygon ( called today National Nuclear Center of Kazakhstan). The regions of Semipalatinsk has a high frequency of various diseases primarily due to fallout from nearby nuclear test sites, as human and environmental effects of nuclear radiation, contamination and pollution from atomic tests programs of the former Soviet Union. Semey is the Kazakh name for Semipalatinsk and is located in the Eastern Kazakhstan Province. © 2008 Didier Ruef .
