Kazakhstan. Semipalatinsk. Semey Oncology Centre. Radiotherapy Cobalt Unit. Natalia Zentova lost her right breast due to a surgery to remove entirely a tumor. Radiotherapy is used as a first-line radical therapy in a number of malignancies, but also used for adjuvant therapy, i.e. when the macroscopic tumor has already been completely removed surgically but there is a reasonable statistical risk that it will recur. Natalia Zentova lived her entire life near the Semipalatinsk Polygon ( called today National Nuclear Center of Kazakhstan). Natalia Zentova is a second generation victim of the 456 atomic testing - 116 atmospheric, 340 underground - from 1949 to 1989. The regions high frequency of cancer diseases is primarily due to fallout from nearby nuclear test sites. Natalia Zentova shows the human and environmental effects of nuclear radiation, genetic contamination and pollution from atomic tests programs of the former Soviet Union. Semey is the Kazakh name for Semipalatinsk and is located in the Eastern Kazakhstan Province. © 2008 Didier Ruef
