Nagorno-Karabakh, also known as Artsakh, is a landlocked region in the South Caucasus. Lachin is a town internationally recognized de jure as part of Azerbaijan, but currently de facto controlled by the unrecognized Artsakh. Since 1992 the area has been governed by Artsakh, which has renamed the town Berdzor, and acts as the capital of Kashatagh Region. The town and its surrounding region serve as the strategic Lachin corridor connecting the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic with Armenia. On the town center, a stone sculpture of a man with his Kalashnikov fighting during the war. A policeman stands on the road and controls the traffic. A Kalashnikov rifle is any one of a series of automatic rifles based on the original design of Mikhail Kalashnikov. They are officially known in Russian as "Avtomat Kalashnikova" , but are widely known as Kalashnikovs, AK47s, or as a "Kalash". Nagorno-Karabakh is a disputed territory, internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, but most of the region is governed by the Republic of Artsakh (formerly named Nagorno-Karabakh Republic), a de facto independent state with Armenian ethnic population. Since 1994, regular peace talks between Armenia and Azerbaijan mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group have failed to result in a peace treaty. The territory is under the control of the Artsakh Defense Army (which is backed up by Armenian Army) due to the ongoing territorial disputes with Azerbaijan. 4.10.2019 © 2019 Didier Ruef
