Switzerland. Zürich. On display at a shop's window, a picture from the Matterhorn mountain, a set of plates and pot for the cheese fondue, two mannequins with men's fashionable clothes, and a swiss flag. Fondue is a Swiss dish of melted cheese served in a communal pot (caquelon or fondue pot) over a portable stove (réchaud) heated with a candle or spirit lamp, and eaten by dipping bread into the cheese using long-stemmed forks. It was promoted as a Swiss national dish by the Swiss Cheese Union (Schweizerische Käseunion) in the 1930s. The Matterhorn (French: Mont Cervin) is a mountain of the Alps, straddling the main watershed and border between Switzerland and Italy. It is a large, near-symmetrical pyramidal peak in the extended Monte Rosa area of the Pennine Alps, whose summit is 4,478 metres high, making it one of the highest summits in the Alps. The flag of Switzerland displays a white cross in the centre of a square red field. The white cross is known as the Swiss cross. © 1990 Didier Ruef
