Switzerland. Canton Uri. Rütli. 1 August 1990. Swiss national holiday. Public holiday. A man throws a swiss flag in the air. Other men play the traditional Alp horn. The alphorn or alpenhorn or alpine horn is a labrophone, consisting of a wooden natural horn of conical bore, having a wooden cup-shaped mouthpiece, used by mountain dwellers in the Swiss Alps. A group of women wear national traditional costumes. A mother puts on her son's head a hat with edelweiss flowers. Rütli (or Grütli in French) is a mountain meadow in the Seelisberg municipality of the Swiss canton of Uri. Here the oath of the Rütlischwur is said to have occurred, the legendary turning-point in the pursuit of independence. Every August 1, on the Swiss National Day, the oath is re-enacted to commemorate the forming of the Old Swiss Confederacy. Rütli is the birthplace of the Swiss Confederation. The flag of Switzerland displays a white cross in the centre of a square red field. The white cross is known as the Swiss cross. © 1990 Didier Ruef
