Switzerland. Canton Uri. Rütli 1 August 1991. Swiss national holiday. Public holiday. Two bored soldiers wearing military camouflage uniforms and raincoats stand close to two young boys dressed with sweaters with swiss flag. Rütli (or Grütli in French) is a mountain meadow in the Seelisberg municipality of the Swiss canton of Uri. Here the oath of the Rütlischwur is said to have occurred, the legendary turning-point in the pursuit of independence. Every August 1, on the Swiss National Day, the oath is re-enacted to commemorate the forming of the Old Swiss Confederacy. Rütli is the birthplace of the Swiss Confederation. 1.08.1991 © 1991 Didier Ruef
