Switzerland. Canton Uri. Rütli. 1 August 1991. Swiss national holiday. Public holiday. A man with a beard takes an oath of allegiance to Switzerland by holding up his three fingers. He wears a t-shirt with: William Tell (Wilhelm Tell - Guillaume Tell), his crossbow and his son; the flags of the 26 swiss cantons. He holds on his arm a bag with ta Swiss flag and the words Suisse, Schweiz, Switzerland. A group of soldiers in military uniforms and a policeman. Rütli (or Grütli in French) is a mountain meadow in the Seelisberg municipality of the Swiss canton of Uri. Here the oath of the Rütlischwur is said to have occurred, the legendary turning-point in the pursuit of independence. Every August 1, on the Swiss National Day, the oath is re-enacted to commemorate the forming of the Old Swiss Confederacy. Rütli is the birthplace of the Swiss Confederation. 1.08.1991 © 1991 Didier Ruef
