Switzerland. Canton Uri. Rütli. 1 August 1991. Swiss national holiday. Public holiday. A soldier wearing a military outfitt stands close to a group of dancers, all women dressed as soldiers from the Middles Ages and holding spears in their hands. Rütli (or Grütli in French) is a mountain meadow in the Seelisberg municipality of the Swiss canton of Uri. Here the oath of the Rütlischwur is said to have occurred, the legendary turning-point in the pursuit of independence. Every August 1, on the Swiss National Day, the oath is re-enacted to commemorate the forming of the Old Swiss Confederacy. Rütli is the birthplace of the Swiss Confederation. 1.08.1991 © 1990 Didier Ruef
