Christian Solidarity International (CSI) is a swiss based NGO (Non Governmental Organisation) which buys back for 50 US$ per head dinka slaves to arab traders from North Sudan as part a Slave Redemption Program. The Government of Sudan is waging a "Holy War" to Islamize by force the ethnically and religiously diverse country. Slave raids, together with conventional warfare, are the most potent means used by the Government of Sudan (GOS) to carry out its policy of Islamization. During the slave raids, able-bodied men are killed while tens of thousands of Christian and animist women and children are captured and taken to the Arab and Muslim-dominated north as slaves. What awaits them there is endless hard work, beatings and poor nutrition; girls and women suffer sexual abuse and, often, ritual genital excision. In order to rob the slaves of their cultural and religious identity, their slave owners give them Muslim names and force them to recite Islamic prayers. Christian Solidarity International (CSI) redeems slaves whose destitute families have not the means to do so and returns them to their families. Through international campaigns, CSI works towards the abolition of slavery in Sudan.
