Gardens for Life is a three year initiative running from January 2004. It is Eden's first international education project. Gardens for Life is a three year initiative running from January 2004. It is Eden's first international education project. Now in its pilot phase it is creating a network of schools in UK, India and Kenya. The schools will develop gardens and grow food crops in pots in Birmingham or Mumbai, to larger outdoor areas in Rift Valley Province. The teachers and children in each area will report and comment on their experiences to each other, making the project fully inter-continental. Teachers will develop and trial lessons that use the gardening experience for effective teaching. Hands on learning can be fun and informative ! The real importance of children experiencing the growing of food is the opportunity it offers to learn about global issues. The idea being that food is the gateway into issues of environmental conservation, sustainable development and global citizenship, as the schools' programme at Eden has shown. The first phase of the project will produce educational materials of great value, since they will have been tried and tested in three continents. It provides a framework for connecting school learning and local knowledge. In Africa these are often widely separated and the project will enhance the children's lessons. The project is partly funded by the Department for International Development and Syngenta Foundation.
