Kazakhstan. Aralsk. Aral sea. Due to the man-made environmental disaster by overuse of water resources and the environmental effects of industrial pollution in the former Soviet Union, the Aral sea started to dry up, then shrunk and is now two shallow lakes far from the old shore (100 km distant). Aralsk is located in the Kyzyl Orda Province. © 2008 Didier Ruef
