Switzerland. Canton Ticino. Massagno. A senior man lying down on an emergency medical stretcher is being transported from home. The elderly man is suffering from a blood pressure problem and needs to be brought to hospital for a medical examination. Three paramedics check the patient’s health in building entrance. The aged man’ family looks at the scene from the first floor. The paramedics wear blue uniforms and work for the Croce Verde Lugano. The man and the woman (R) are professional certified nurses, the third (L) is a volunteer specifically trained in emergency rescue. The volunteer carries in his right hand a monitor which controls a set of vital functions, such as electrocardiogram, blood pressure’s measurement, respiratory rate and pulse oximetry (oxygen saturation), and on his left hand an intravenous infusion with saline solution.The Croce Verde Lugano is a private organization which ensure health safety by addressing different emergencies services and rescue services. Volunteering is generally considered an altruistic activity where an individual provides services for no financial or social gain to benefit another person, group or organization. Volunteering is also renowned for skill development and is often intended to promote goodness or to improve human quality of life.
