Switzerland. Canton Ticino. Camorino. Ceneri Base Tunnel (CBT). Official opening ceremony. Arrival by train from the Swiss President Simonetta Sommaruga (C) and Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis (L). Simonetta Myriam Sommaruga (born 14 May 1960) is a Swiss politician serving as President of the Swiss Confederation for 2020. A member of the Social Democratic Party, she has been a Member of the Federal Council since 2010. Ignazio Cassis (born 13 April 1961) is a Swiss physician and politician. He is affiliated to the FDP The Liberals and was elected to the Federal Council of Switzerland on 20 September 2017. He has served since 1 November 2017 as head of the Department of Foreign Affairs. The Ceneri Base Tunnel (CBT) (Italian: Galleria di base del Monte Ceneri) is a railway base tunnel in Canton Ticino. It passes under Monte Ceneri between Camorino in the Magadino Flat and Vezia near Lugano, and bypasses the former high-altitude rail route through the Monte Ceneri Tunnel. It is composed of two single-track tunnels, each 15.4 km long. It is another part of the New Railway Link through the Alps (NRLA) project. The impact will be significant on international traffic with shorter time trips. The opening of the Ceneri tunnel also means a transport revolution for the southern canton of Ticino. Regional rail lines will be upgraded, and some reckon the change could lead to the creation of a “Ticino City” – one big urban sprawl across the canton. 4.09.2020 © 2020 Didier Ruef
