Switzerland. Canton Bern. Bäriswil. Autumn season. Forest, trees and leaves on the ground. Traffic sign. No cars and motorcycles are allowed to drive on the dirt road. Only farm vehicles can access the area. An old medieval milestone indicates that three hours are need to reach Bern ( today 18 minutes by car, 30 by train and 42 by bicycle). A milestone is a numbered marker placed on a route such as a road, railway line, canal or boundary. They can indicate the distance to towns, cities, and other places or landmarks; or they can give their position on the route relative to some datum location. On roads they are typically located at the side or in a median or central reservation. They are alternatively known as mile markers, mileposts or mile posts (sometimes abbreviated MPs). Commonly the term "milestone" may also refer to markers placed at other distances, such as every kilometre. Milestones are installed to provide reference points along the road. This can be used to reassure travellers that the proper path is being followed, and to indicate either distance travelled or the remaining distance to a destination. Bäriswil is a municipality in the district of Bern-Mittelland. 15.11.2020 © 2020 Didier Ruef
