Switzerland. Canton Ticino. Lugano. Piazza della Riforma and Palazzo Civico, the seat of the city hall. Women's strike. An umbrella with a Venus symbol with a fist. Right thumb with red nail polish. A group of women listens to a young woman speaking to the crowd with a microphone. Women across Switzerland have been taking to the streets in a historic strike demanding equal treatment and conditions compared with their male counterparts. The protests organised by trade unions come almost three decades after a 1991 strike, when women demanded that a constitutional article on equality of the sexes be translated into concrete legislation. Many women – and men, who are in support of the movement – are wearing fuchsia purple clothing which is the symbolic color of the event. A gender symbol is a pictogram or glyph used to represent either biological sex or sociological gender. Venus symbol is used for a female organism or woman. The Piazza della Reforma is Lugano’s main square. 14.06.2019 © 2019 Didier Ruef
