Cape Verde. Saõ Vincente. Mindelo. A mother and her daughter stand by a private house while the mother knocks on the door. Mural painting in Ribeira Bote. A portrait of Nelson Mandela and a young African boy, both with their arms straight and their fists raised. The raised fist, or the clenched fist, is a long-standing image of solidarity, especially with a political movement, and can also be used as a salute expressing unity, strength, or resistance. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (18 July 1918 – 5 December 2013) was a South African anti-apartheid activist and politician who served as the first president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the country's first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election. His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid by fostering racial reconciliation. Ideologically an African nationalist and socialist, he served as the president of the African National Congress (ANC) party from 1991 to 1997. Mandela served 27 years in prison. São Vicente (Portuguese for "Saint Vincent") is one of the Barlavento Islands of Cape Verde or Cabo Verde, officially the Republic of Cabo Verde, which is an island country and archipelagic state of West Africa. 2.03.2025 © 2025 Didier Ruef
