Ethiopia. Addis Ababa is the capital city and the name of a region of Ethiopia. Hassan (R) is a member of the Circus Ethiopia. He stands near an old communist billboard in the yard at Misrak Comprehensive High School. Upside down are the faces of Lenin L), Engels (C), Marx (R) and a star. Vladimir Ilyich Lenin was a Russian Marxist revolutionary, intellectual and politician. Friedrich Engels was a German-English industrialist, social scientist, author, political theorist, philosopher, and father of Marxist theory, alongside Karl Marx. Karl Heinrich Marx was a German philosopher, economist, sociologist, historian, journalist, and revolutionary socialist. His ideas played a significant role in the development of social science and the socialist political movement. He published various books during his lifetime, with the most notable being The Communist Manifesto (1848) and Capital (1867-1894); some of his works were co-written with his friend and fellow German revolutionary socialist, Friedrich Engels. The five-pointed red star is a symbol of communism as well as broader socialism in general. It is sometimes understood to represent the five fingers of the worker's hand, which run the five continents; or it is understood to symbolize the five entities "classes" of socialist society: workers, farmers, intellectuals, soldiers, and youth. Circus Ethiopia was legally established in 1991 with a view to introduce circus art in Ethiopia. © 1996 Didier Ruef
