Italy. Apulia Region. Locorotondo. The altar in Chiesa Rettoria Madonna della Greca (Church of Greca) is a Roman Catholic church. A giant painting of the legend of Saint George and the Dragon which describes the saint taming and slaying a dragon that demanded human sacrifices; the saint thereby rescues the princess chosen as the next offering. Saint George was a Roman soldier of Greek origin and a member of the Praetorian Guard for Roman emperor Diocletian, who was sentenced to death for refusing to recant his Christian faith. He became one of the most venerated saints and martyrs in Christianity, and was especially venerated by the Crusaders. He is considered in catholic hagiography, as one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers and one of the most prominent military saints. A catholic priest puts away at end of mass tall candlesticks. Locorotondo is a town and comune with a population of about 14,000. The city is known for its circular structure which is now a historical center, from which derives its name, which means "Round place". Apulia (Puglia) is a region in Southern Italy. 5.12.18 © 2018 Didier Ruef
