Switzerland. Canton Ticino. Lugano. A senior man is brought by ambulance to hospital for medical examinations. The elderly man is suffering from severe respiratory problems. The emergency doctor Daniele Speciale (R) is working with two paramedics. They all work for the Croce Verde Lugano. They wear blue uniforms and medical gloves. The woman (C) is a professional certified nurse, the man (L) is a volunteer specifically trained in emergency rescue. The doctor is permanently controlling health’s state of the aged patient. The senior citizen has a mask on his face and receives oxygen from a medical ventilator. A medical ventilator (or simply ventilator in context) is a mechanical ventilator, a machine designed to move breathable air into and out of the lungs, to provide breathing for a patient who is physically unable to breathe, or breathing insufficiently. A monitor controls the patient’s vital functions, such as electrocardiogram, blood pressure’s measurement, respiratory rate and pulse oximetry (oxygen saturation). On the man's arm, an intravenous infusion with saline solution is fixed. The Croce Verde Lugano is a private organization which ensure health safety by addressing different emergencies services and rescue services. Volunteering is generally considered an altruistic activity where an individual provides services for no financial or social gain to benefit another person, group or organization. Volunteering is also renowned for skill development and is often intended to promote goodness or to improve human quality of life.
