Switzerland. Geneva. Protest against the World Trade Organization (WTO) agreement . An old man, wearing a pair of shorts and a cap, smokes a cigar while a young man, a demonstrator dressed with a flowers pareo, stripped to the waist, barefeet and a black mask on the face, writes a graffiti on the metal curtain of a bank. Handprint on his back. The pāreu or pareo was used only to refer to women's skirts, as men wore a loincloth, called a maro. Nowadays the term is applied to any piece of cloth worn wrapped around the body, worn by males or females. © 1998 Didier Ruef
