Switzerland. Canton Ticino. Lugano. A senior woman is brought by ambulance to hospital for medical examinations. The elderly man is suffering from a stroke. The emergency doctor Daniele Speciale (L) is working with two paramedics. They all work for the Croce Verde Lugano. They wear blue uniforms and medical gloves. The man (R) is a professional certified nurse, the woman (C) is a volunteer specifically trained in emergency rescue. A monitor controls the patient’s vital functions, such as electrocardiogram, blood pressure’s measurement, respiratory rate and pulse oximetry (oxygen saturation). On the aged woman's arm, an intravenous infusion with saline solution is fixed. The Croce Verde Lugano is a private organization which ensure health safety by addressing different emergencies services and rescue services. Volunteering is generally considered an altruistic activity where an individual provides services for no financial or social gain to benefit another person, group or organization. Volunteering is also renowned for skill development and is often intended to promote goodness or to improve human quality of life.
