007-Geneva-Rue des Granges-Ruef.jpg
Switzerland. Geneva. The only existing stele of Jean Calvin in Geneva. The stele stands in the garden of the " Hôtel de Sellon ", located on number 2 of the "rue des Granges" in the old city. The private mansion, built 300 years ago, houses the Museum and Foundation Zoubov, of the deceased russian countess Tatiana Zoubov. The state of Geneva is today the owner of the mansion and hosts there its formal receptions. Jean (John) Calvin (10 July 1509 - 27 May 1564) was an influential French theologian and pastor during the Protestant Reformation. He was a principal figure in the development of the system of Christian theology later called Calvinism. A stele is a stone, generally taller than it is wide, erected for funerals or commemorative purposes, most usually decorated with the names and titles of the deceased or living -- inscribed, carved in relief (bas-relief, sunken-relief, high-relief, and so forth). 12.03.2010 © 2010 Didier Ruef
