Kazakhstan. Atomic lake, close to the village of Znamenka and Sarzhal. The atomic lake was a Soviet nuclear test during the Soviet atomic bomb project and was a powerful test in the Nuclear Explosions for the National Economy series. It was an underground test. The area is still radioactive. The atomic lake is on the edge of the Semipalatinsk Polygon ( called today National Nuclear Center of Kazakhstan) where took place 456 atomic testing - 116 atmospheric, 340 underground - from 1949 to 1989. The regions high frequency of various diseases is primarily due to fallout from nuclear test sites. The picture shows the inhuman landscape and environmental effects of nuclear radiation, genetic contamination and pollution from atomic tests programs of the former Soviet Union. Ecological disaster.
