Eritrea. Maekel province. Asmara. Ministry of Health. National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP). A black woman is using a microscope to cross-check blood slides for malaria. Infected falciparum malaria slides are lying on the table. The plasmodium falciparum is a protozoan parasite, one of the species of plasmodium that cause malaria in humans. It is transmitted by Anopheles mosquitoes. Plasmodium falciparum is the most dangerous of these infections as plasmodium falciparum malaria has the highest rates of complications and mortality. The Global Fund through the eritrean Ministry of Health supports the programm with a Malaria grant (financial aid). © 2006 Didier Ruef
