Khat is a flowering plant native to tropical East Africa and contains the alkaloid cathinone, an amphetamine-like stimulant which causes excitement and euphoria. Khat is one of the few commodities that is traded daily and serves as a type of speed when chewed, Somaliland men usualy chew in the afternoon hours. Khat is considered as a drug which abuse can produce mild to moderate psychic dependence. Somaliland is an unrecognized de facto sovereign state located in the Horn of Africa.
