Switzerland. Canton Ticino. Lugano. A senior woman lying down on an emergency medical stretcher is brought to hospital for medical examination. The elderly woman is suffering from respiratory problems. The paramedic, wearing a blue uniform and medical gloves, is a volunteer specifically trained in emergency rescue and working for the Croce Verde Lugano. He checks the woman's pulse into patient’s finger. The patient is also connected to a monitor which controls a set of vital functions, such as electrocardiogram, blood pressure’s measurement, respiratory rate and pulse oximetry (oxygen saturation). The Croce Verde Lugano is a private organization which ensure health safety by addressing different emergencies services and rescue services. Volunteering is generally considered an altruistic activity where an individual provides services for no financial or social gain to benefit another person, group or organization. Medical gloves are disposable gloves used during medical examinations and procedures to help prevent cross-contamination between caregivers and patients.
