United Arab Emirates (UAE). Dubai. The Dubai Camel Racing Club is located along the Al Ain road, in Al Marmoom Dubai. Camels training with handlers riding animals. A robot jockey wearing the number 2 is strapped to a camel (C). A robot jockey is commonly used on camels in camel racing as a replacement for human jockeys. Robotic jockeys are used and include shock absorbers and GPS tracking systems. Developed since 2004, the robotic jockeys have phased out the use of human jockeys, which in the case of camel racing did often employ small children who reportedly suffer repeated systemic human rights abuses. In response to international condemnation of such abuses, the UAE have banned the use of human jockeys in favor of robots. During the races, the camels' owners control the robots' whips from their speeding four-wheel drives at the side of the track. With its centuries-old history and culture, camel racing is an extremely well-loved and intimate part of Arab culture. The race is fought on traditional thoroughbred racing camels that are native and distinct to UAE.
