Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) involves breathing oxygen in a pressurized chamber in which the atmospheric pressure is raised up to three times higher than normal. HBOT can be used as a primary treatment or as an adjuvant to surgical and/or pharmacologic interventions. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a well-established treatment for decompression sickness. Other conditions treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy include serious infections, bubbles of air in blood vessels, and wounds that may not heal as a result of diabetes or radiation injury. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, or HBOT, is a type of treatment used to speed up healing of carbon monoxide poisoning, gangrene, stubborn wounds, and infections in which tissues are starved for oxygen.
