Jordan. Petra. The archeological site is part of the UNESCO world heritage project. The Nabataeans were an arabian industrious tribe which settled down in southern Jordan 2000 years ago. They built Petra at a strategical place where they could control the commercial roads of the antique Arabia. Petra is located at the bottom of a spectacular deep gorge surrounded by mountains. After walking down the "Siq", a narrow and long path through a fault due to a prehistoric earthquake, tourists discover the fist building "El Khazneh". Its high façade is carved in the rocks. © 2002 Didier Ruef
